Doctorate

A doctorate at the Faculty of Behavioural and Cultural Studies can be pursued in the subjects of education or educational science, sociocultural anthropology, gerontology, psychology, and sports science, as well as in diaconal science and social ethics (Faculty of Theology, Institute of Diaconal Science). If you have any questions regarding doctoral studies or regarding the application for admission as a doctoral candidate, please contact the doctoral office.

Important note regarding the subjects diaconal studies and social ethics

Please note that new applications for doctoral studies in Diaconal Studies and Social Ethics can no longer be submitted. There is a transitional arrangement for accepted doctoral candidates – see § 25 (3) of the doctoral degree regulations of the Faculty of Behavioral and Empirical Cultural Studies dated September 28, 2023.

Note on the Doctoral Title

The Faculty of Behavioral and Cultural Studies at Heidelberg University awards the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) on the basis of doctoral achievements. Please note that the academic degree of PhD is not awarded at our faculty and cannot be used as an English “translation” of the doctoral degree.
